Simultaneous Nitrification And Denitrification In Single Basin

Simultaneous Nitrification And Denitrification In Single Basin

Biological nutrient removal is required in many municipal and industrial applications, and the DyNox® system provides a simple, reliable, and cost-effective method for achieving nitrogen reduction.

By cycling air delivery and creating alternating aerobic and anoxic zones within the same aeration basin, DyNox® eliminates the need for separate anoxic tanks, internal recycle pumps (MLSS pumps), and other complex BNR infrastructure

How DyNox® Works

1. Intelligent Cycling of Aerobic and Anoxic Conditions

DyNox® uses controlled air-on/air-off sequencing to establish aerobic and anoxic phases directly in the aeration basin. This is accomplished through:

  1. A DO based feedback loop that regulates blower output
  2. Automatic electric valve controllers mounted on each floating aeration header/chain
  3. Valves that open and close in timed intervals (typically 20–60 minutes)

During the aerobic phase, ammonia is nitrified. When the valves switch and air is reduced, the basin transitions into an anoxic phase, allowing denitrification to occur.

The system then repeats the cycle continuously.

2. No Additional Basins or Recycle Pumps Required

Because DyNox® creates alternating biological environments inside the same basin, facilities avoid:

  1. Separate anoxic tanks
  2. Internal mixed-liquor recycle pumps
  3. Complex piping
  4. Additional civil construction

This makes DyNox® one of the most cost-effective BNR solutions available.

3. Optimized Performance with Floating Aeration Headers

When paired with the Bioworks floating, moving aeration header system, DyNox® achieves highly efficient nitrogen removal.

The natural movement of the headers improves mixing and oxygen distribution, enhancing both nitrification and denitrification.

Expected Effluent Quality

In municipal wastewater applications, DyNox® typically achieves:

  1. Total Nitrogen < 8 mg/L
  2. Consistent nitrification and denitrification
  3. Stable year-round performance

These results meet or exceed most NPDES nutrient requirements.
